Ford first introduced the Mustang as a 1964 1/2 model, and it was an instant success. In order to celebrate the car’s 50th (and 1/2) anniversary, Ford is releasing the 2015 Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition. Available with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission, the Limited Edition Mustang is based on the GT fastback with performance pack and includes nearly every available option (in fact, it’s the only way to get an automatic Mustang with the performance pack). The only two color choices are Wimbledon White (like the first Mustang sold, serial number 0001) or Kona Blue, and both colors are exclusive to the anniversary models.
The 5.0 liter V8 puts out more than 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The 6-piston Brembo front brakes are surrounded by 19 inch wheels with a Y-spoke design that are inspired by the chromed steel wheels found on the original Mustang. Tires are Pirelli P-Zero summer tires in 255/40-19 for the front and 275/40-19 for the rear. Automatic cars get a limited-slip rear differential with a 3.55:1 axle ratio, while manual transmission cars get a Torsen differential with a 3.73:1 ratio.
Chrome trim was popular in the 1960s, and the 50 Year Limited Edition Mustang is trying to bring it back with chrome highlights on the grille, side glass, and tri-bar taillamps. These models will also be the only ones to receive a faux gas cap badge on the rear fascia (complete with ‘50 Years’ added to the GT logo) and louvered rear quarter-windows which are comprised of layered sheets of glass built using a specially developed construction technique (unlike the external louvers of the past).
The interior gets an individually etched serialized 50 Year Limited Edition badge on the passenger side. The Limited Edition is also the only Mustang to get cashmere stitched instrument panel, shifter boot, center armrest, door inserts, leather wrapped steering wheel, and two-tone cashmere and black leather seats. The cars will also get loop carpet floor mats with cashmere stitching and suede binding.
Only 1,964 of the 50 Year Limited Edition Mustangs will be built, and they will be available starting in fall of 2014.
