The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is an entry-level four-door sedan that provides excellent fuel mileage without resorting to the installation of a hybrid drivetrain.  The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is also somewhat sportier to drive than several of its entry-level competitors.  Standard safety gear included with the Jetta TDI is listed as electronic traction control and stability control, dual forward airbags, side curtain airbags that extend along the entire length of the passenger compartment, and side airbags for those riding up front.

Under the hood, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that puts out 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque.  A six-speed manual transmission is included at no extra charge, while a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual can be added as an option.  Fuel mileage for the turbodiesel Jetta checks in at 30-mpg in stop and go driving and 42-mpg on the highway.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI (MSRP $22,990) comes with power seats, 16-inch wheels, a pass through the rear seat to the trunk, heaters for the front two buckets, Bluetooth connectivity, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an iPod interface.  It's possible to add the Premium package to the TDI (louder stereo system, sunroof), as well as an optional navigation system, keyless entry and ignition, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
