The 10 Most Expensive SUVs to Insure share a few key traits with other kinds of expensive vehicles. For starters, they often feature high-end materials and leading-edge technologies. If those elements get damaged, fixing or repairing it won’t be cheap. Also, since these SUVs can deliver sports-car-like performance, insurance companies recognize the same increased potential for enthusiast-related claims. It just makes sense that drivers who feel the need for speed now are more likely to need a tow truck later. Low sales are another factor behind high insurance rates. When a vehicle is rare, so are parts, which means those cost more individually.
We also checked in with Insure.com data and for the sake of variety, spread the love by picking the Most Expensive SUVs to Insure from 10 different brands.
The most expensive SUVs to insure are sold by top-end automakers that used to limit their efforts to cars. Bentley, for example, had been building high-end luxury cars for nearly 100 years before turning to sport-utilities. Today, the 2018 Bentley Bentayga (especially in its range-topping Mulliner trim) stands out as one of the most opulent SUVs ever produced. Along with a 12-cylinder engine, it offers ultra-lux touches such as lambswool rugs, a jeweled fuel-filler cap, and real crystal champagne glasses to complement its integrated bottle cooler. Bentley also warns shoppers that, “due to the highly complex, handcrafted nature of the luxurious interior features,” only a very limited number of Mulliner models will be produced, each with an MSRP of more than $235,000.

Not all of the most expensive SUVs to insure are pure luxury choices. Consider the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G Class. Sure, it provides typical premium cues ranging from carbon-fiber trim to Nappa leather upholstery, along with an available handbuilt biturbo V12 engine for the high-powered AMG model. And there is no shortage of advanced technology available, including a Harman Kardon audio system and mobile Wi-Fi. Yet the difference-maker here comes in the form of the G550 4X42. Without sacrificing premium amenities, this body-on-frame beast is ready to conquer the toughest off-road conditions. Mercedes even equips the G550 4X42 with rugged, and expensive, portal axles. They enable up to 17 inches of ground clearance. The MSRP for this incredible SUV? That’s pegged at $227,300.

Beyond Bentley, there’s another historically British brand on our list of the most expensive SUVs to insure. That’s Land Rover, with the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography long-wheelbase models which open at $208,200. The Range Rover range-topper also combines high levels of luxury and off-road performance, complete with available 24-way power-adjustable heated-and-cooled massage-function seats. Those allow you to relax in comfort while the Range Rover wades through water up to 35.4 inches deep. And if you’re looking for technology, you could say the sky’s the limit with the Range Rover. The gesture-control sunblind lets you cover and uncover the panoramic roof by simply waving your hand. Less simple is repairing the Range Rover’s aluminum architecture, which increases the cost of insurance coverage further.

The most expensive SUVs to insure are usually the most technologically advanced, too. In the case of the 2018 Tesla Model X for instance, you’ve got standard content like a massive 17-inch touchscreen, complex “Falcon Wing” rear doors, and a sophisticated all-electric propulsion system. In fact, that electric powertrain can provide up to 295 miles of driving on a single charge. If you feel the need for speed, the P100D model (with an MSRP of $128,300) can enable 0-60 times of less than 3 seconds. The Model X also showcases some of the industry’s most comprehensive driver-assistance features. You can even get out of the Model X and let it park itself, or have it “un-park” and come to you. Expensive-to-replace luxury items also include the vehicle’s panoramic glass windshield.

We’re looking ahead a bit here, but we do think the 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo will be among this year’s most expensive SUVs to insure. Due this fall, this is the all-new model with an MSRP of $124,600. More importantly for enthusiasts, it will be quicker and faster than the 2018 version. Much credit for that goes to a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 550 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque. Configured with that engine, the new Cayenne Turbo promises a top track speed of 177 mph and 0-60 times of 3.7 seconds. But the Cayenne remains capable off-road as well, thanks in part to a new air suspension that can be adjusted to six height settings.

BMW brings a distinctive approach to our gallery of the most expensive SUVs to insure. Unlike many rivals, the 2018 BMW X6 (MSRP: $105,100) has a sleek, coupe-like profile. Indeed, BMW calls the X6 a “Sports Activity Coupe,” not a sport-utility vehicle. Owners though will call it a fun-to-drive style machine that also combines luxury and versatility. For the absolute highest levels of performance, with high insurance rates to match, we suggest the X6 M. This version has been tuned-up by BMW’s in-house performance-engineering team with a 567-horsepower twin-turbo V8 that’s good for 0-60 sprint times of 4.1 seconds. At the same time, the cabin, including the dashboard, is swathed in Merino leather and supplies a choice between oak, aluminum, and carbon-fiber trim.

Next on our list of the most expensive SUVs to insure is the 2018 Volvo XC90. The XC90 was named the North American Truck of the Year when it was introduced in 2016, and this year’s lineup continues to impress. For the most refined ownership experience, however, go straight for the Excellence trim. It’s priced from $104,900, but that’s a bargain here. For less than half the price of a Bentley Bentayga, the XC90 Excellence goes beyond Bentley’s crystal champagne glasses with both those items and a crystal gear-shift lever, which is for the XC90’s cutting-edge supercharged, turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain. With this setup, the XC90 delivers 400 horsepower, 19 miles of all-electric driving, and a further range of 360 miles at 27 mpg combined.

The most expensive SUVs to insure from the American brands are led by the 2018 Cadillac Escalade. Despite its old-school reputation, the 2018 Escalade serves up a wealth of modern-day technologies that includes the brand’s newest breakthrough. The “Rear-Camera Mirror” relies on a rear-facing camera to provide a live video feed to the Escalade’s rearview mirror. Because the camera is mounted outside of the vehicle, it can increase the driver’s field of vision by about 300%. The four-wheel-drive Platinum trim, with an MSRP of $98,090, also boasts the usual array of fine leathers and exotic woods for its cabin. Additionally, as a “real” SUV, the Escalade packs a 6.2-liter V8 that has 420 horsepower on tap and can haul more than four tons.

If you need some serious capability to go with your automotive splendor, don’t forget to test drive the 2018 Lincoln Navigator. Yes, it’s one of the industry’s most expensive SUVs to insure, but it can also out-tow the Cadillac Escalade. To be specific, the Navigator’s top trailer rating is 400 pounds higher, at 8,700 pounds. Nor is the Navigator lacking for luxury. The Black Label trim, stickered from $96,905 in its all-wheel-drive, extended-length configuration, sets the bar with upscale content packages in three curated themes. Hand-wrapped leather surfaces and expressive real-wood trims are available for each, as is throne-like first-row seating. Among the highlights: 30-way power-adjustable front seats that coddle occupants with heat, ventilation and a built-in massage function.

We can’t end our list of the most expensive SUVs to insure without mentioning the 2019 Lamborghini Urus. Expected to go on sale later this year, the Urus isn’t quite as exotic-looking as some of Lamborghini’s supercars, yet it’s certainly as quick. Per the automaker, the Urus can race from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.6 seconds. Moreover, the top speed for the Urus is set at more than three times that mark, at more than 190 mph. Then, to help rein in the vehicle’s 650-horsepower twin-turbo V8, the Urus wears standard carbon-ceramic brakes. It all adds up to a price tag that should be north of $200K. Needless to say, that means Urus insurance premiums will be likewise pricy.
