NHTSA: 2014 Chevy Impala Earns 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score

While it’s no surprise that the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala has received a 5-star overall safety score in the New Car Assessment Program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, doing so is still an important accomplishment. After all, the previous edition of the Impala wasn’t up to the task. But as noted by Gay Kent, general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness for General Motors: “Safety is a key consideration for all car buyers, and [the next-gen] Impala sets a new benchmark for Chevrolet’s flagship sedan. The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is designed to provide excellent crash safety, and offers customers several safety technologies not previously available in Chevrolets.” 

Among the Impala’s key driver-assistance resources:

• The first deployment of full-speed-range adaptive cruise control in a Chevrolet product
• A Chevy premiere for “crash imminent braking,” which relies on radar to detect and alert drivers to potential crash threats—then can apply the brakes automatically to help mitigate the danger
• Brake pre-fill, which leverages the adaptive cruise-control and collision-mitigation braking systems to prepare the brakes for aggressive stopping
• Forward-collision alert
• Lane-departure warning
• Side blind-zone alert
• Rear cross-traffic alert
• A rear-vision camera system with dynamic guidelines
• Ultrasonic rear park assist
• Hill hold/start assist

Owners of the 2014 Chevy Impala also will benefit from standard safety enhancers like 10 airbags and GM’s OnStar telematics service.

A final note: The 2014 Chevrolet Impala has not undergone the full range of Top Safety Pick testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, although it has received top IIHS grades in individual evaluations for side-impact safety and occupant protection during moderate-overlap frontal impacts.
