Lamborghini was founded in 1963, and since then, they have been content to build a small number of cars each year. Because they don’t build many cars, a limited edition Lamborghini really is special, sometimes with only a handful of examples built. Some special editions mostly consist of a few styling tweaks, but some are much more unique, and most push the envelope just like every good Lamborghini has in the past. For our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models, we’ve included a number of different models from the 1970s to the present, and there should be a little bit of something for everyone. Read on to discover our favorite limited edition Lamborghinis, sorted from least to most rare.

For our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited editions, we’ve included a number of different models from the 1970s to the present, and there should be a little bit of something for everyone. Read on to discover our favorite limited edition Lamborghinis, sorted from the least to the rare.

10) Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Balboni (250 examples)

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Balboni was a special edition created to celebrate the retirement of long-time Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni. Limited to 250 examples, the LP 550-2 Balboni differed from other Lamborghinis of the era by being rear-wheel drive (whereas all the other models in the lineup featured all-wheel drive). The 5.2-liter V10 generates 542 horsepower and can get the Balboni to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 199 mph. Thanks to the rear-wheel drive design, the LP 550-2 lacks the understeer found in most other Gallardo models, making it a little trickier to drive, but also that much more rewarding.

9) Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale (150 examples)

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale is a special stripped-down version of the Gallardo LP570-4, and with a dry weight of under 3,000 pounds, it might be the most extreme Gallardo built. An homage to the Super Trofeo race car, options included carbon-ceramic brakes, a roll cage, and a 4-point harness. Power comes from the same 562-horsepower 5.2-liter V10 as the regular LP 570-4, which gets the Super Trofeo Stradale to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 199 mph. Production was limited to 150 examples, making the Super Trofeo Stradale eligible for our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models.

8) Lamborghini Murcielago 40th Anniversary Edition (50 examples)

The Lamborghini Murcielago 40th Anniversary Edition was released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lamborghini in 2003. Limited to only 50 examples, the 40th Anniversary Edition was largely a styling exercise with Verde Artemis paint, grey anthracite wheels, and silver-grey brake calipers, as well as 40th anniversary logos on the sides and a numbered limited edition plaque inside the rear window. Power comes from the same 6.2-liter V12 as the regular Murcielago with 575 horsepower, which is enough to push the supercar to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 mph. Despite the limited differences compared to the normal model, the limited run means that this is still a collectible model.

7) Lamborghini Centenario (40 examples)

The limited edition Lamborghini Centenario was built to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of Lamborghini. Limited to just 20 Coupes and 20 Roadsters, the Centenario is loosely based on the Aventador, but with even more extreme styling, a lower curb weight and a version of the 6.5-liter V12 that produces 759 horsepower. Lamborghini says that the sprint to 60 miles per hour is over in just 2.8 seconds and that the top speed is somewhere north of 217 mph. The Centenario is one car on our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models that has no problem standing out from the crowd.

6) Lamborghini Reventon (21 examples)

The Lamborghini Reventon is a limited edition supercar that is based on the Murcielago but with a different body and a few other tweaks. Both the exterior and interior take their styling cues from jet aircraft, and the instrument cluster has a cool (but not that informative) fighter aircraft mode. Power comes from a 650-horsepower version of Lamborghini’s 6.5-liter V12, and while Lamborghini hasn’t released much performance information about the Reventon, we’d expect the run to 60 miles per hour to take less than three seconds and the top speed to be more than 220 mph. Only 21 examples were built, 20 of which were sold to the public.

5) Lamborghini Sesto Elemento (20 examples)

The Lamborghini Sesto Elemento (or Sixth Element, referring to carbon, the sixth element on the periodic table) is an extremely lightweight track day car. Limited to 20 examples, the Sesto Elemento weighs in at only 2,202 pounds (around the same as a Mazda Miata). Power comes from a 5.2-liter V10 engine that makes 570 horsepower, which is enough to get the feather-light car to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds and on to a top speed somewhere over 200 mph. While the fact that it isn’t legal for road use is a bit inconvenient, the Sesto Elemento is still one of the most collectible cars on our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models.

4) Lamborghini Veneno (5 examples)/Veneno Roadster (9 examples)

The Veneno is an extremely limited edition car, with Lamborghini building only 5 examples of the hardtop (3 of which were sold to the public) and 9 examples of the Roadster. Based largely on the Aventador, the Veneno uses a unique body that continues the Lamborghini special edition tradition of stretching the brand’s styling limits. Power comes from a 740-horsepower version of the Aventador’s 6.5-liter V12, which can get the car to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds and on to a top speed that is limited to 220 mph. Like most of the cars on our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models, the Veneno sold out almost as soon as it was announced.

3) Lamborghini Countach Walter Wolf Special (3 examples)

If you were a child in the ‘80s, you probably knew someone who had a poster of a Lamborghini Countach in their bedroom. But that Countach was nothing like the model that first appeared in the ‘70s, and that’s partially thanks to Walter Wolf. An owner of the original model, he wasn’t happy with the car’s performance, wanting more power and more grip. He wrote Lamborghini a check and they responded with a car that had engine tweaks, wider tires with flared arches, and a new wing. Only three Walter Wolf Specials were built, but many of the ideas were integrated into the later versions of the Countach.

2) Lamborghini Countach Turbo S (2 examples)

The Lamborghini Countach Turbo S was a series of two factory-built prototypes that featured twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V12 engines. Producing somewhere in the neighbourhood of 750 horsepower, the Turbo S could hit 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds and go on to a top speed of 207 mph, numbers which were unheard of in 1984 when the cars were built. Only one of the two cars is still known to exist, with the other having disappeared (or been destroyed) somewhere along the line. That makes the Countach Turbo S not only one of the rarest cars on our list of 10 Lamborghini special and limited edition models, but perhaps also a barn-find waiting to happen.

1) Lamborghini Aventador J (1-2 examples)

The Lamborghini Aventador J is a one-off car that was specially designed for the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The car has a speedster design, with no roof and essentially no windshield, and while the car resembles an Aventador, most of the styling is unique. Power comes from a 700-horsepower version of Lamborghini’s 6.5-liter V12, and while no specific performance numbers have been published, we imagine that they would seem amplified by all that wind in your face. Not just a concept, the Aventador J is fully road-legal and was actually sold before the Geneva Motor Show took place. There are even rumors that a copy was built for a second special owner.
