The Lexus SmartAccess system is a traditional keyless entry system, allowing the driver to lock and unlock the doors, open the trunk, and start the car, all without having to remove their key from their pocket. Sensors in the car detect the SmartAccess key, and then allow the car to be unlocked when you touch the door handle. Once inside the car, the driver depresses the brake and then presses the Start/Stop button to start the engine. Pressing the Start/Stop button without depressing the brake toggles the system between Off, Accessory, and Run modes, similar to a normal key-based ignition.

The Lexus SmartAccess Card Key adds a small twist to the system, in the form of a wallet-sized electronic key.
