All About The Latest Audi 3.0 TDI Engine

Audi has recently released some information regarding their next generation of 3.0 liter TDI engines. The V6 turbocharged clean diesels will make either 218 HP or 272 HP depending on the version, and should also be up to 13% more fuel efficient than the current powerplant, though improvements vary from one model to the next. Depending on the vehicle, torque output is said to be as much as 442.5 lb-ft.

The new engine has a 90 degree bank angle and a displacement of 2,967 cubic centimeters (around 181 cubic inches). Improvements include piston rings and pins that have been optimized to minimize friction losses, newly designed cylinder heads, and an updated turbocharger and variable-load oil pump. A new innovative thermal management system that uses separate cooling circuits for the crankcase and heads also helps improve efficiency.

In order to meet clean diesel standards Audi has combined a NOx (made up of the mono-nitrogen oxides NO and NO2) storage catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter and SCR (or selective catalytic reduction) injection into a single assembly. The exhaust after treatment helps the engine meet the most stringent emissions standards and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 16.1 grams per mile.
