2019 Chevrolet Blazer front three quarter driving ・ Photo by General Motors
The Chevrolet Blazer was one of the first truly modern SUVs. Launched in 1969, the Blazer featured a removable rear roof section instead of a pickup truck bed, paving the way for a whole new definition of an SUV. Now GM has revived the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer as a midsize five-passenger crossover with near-luxury trim options. As a two-row SUV, the Blazer is roomy for passengers and cargo alike.
Blazer driveline options include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 3.6-liter V6, and your choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The Chevy Blazer starts at $29,995, including destination fees, and the top Premier trim costs $43,895. At that price range, the Blazer has plenty of competition from economy brands, and a few of the lower-priced premium brands, as well. Here are 10 2019 Chevrolet Blazer competitors to consider before you buy.
One of most established competitors to the Blazer is the 2019 Nissan Murano. Nissan has been selling the midsize Murano in America since 2003 as a two-row, five-passenger premium economy crossover. The Murano comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive are available.
The Murano is priced competitively with the Blazer, starting at $31,270 and ranging as high as $45,130. Like the Blazer, the Murano offers some excellent luxury and technology packages that deliver popular features such as heated leather seats, power moonroof, automatic emergency braking in both forward and reverse directions, auto high beams, traffic sign recognition, lane departure assistance, and much more. If you’re serious about the Blazer, you’ll definitely want to cross-shop the Murano.

Another longtime Blazer competitor to consider is the 2019 Ford Edge. If you drove the Edge a few years ago, it’s time to take a new look. Ford has dramatically improved the ride and handling of its midsize five-passenger crossover. With a starting price of $29,315, the Edge has a powerful value proposition. The top Luxury model retails for $40,770, so you can save a few dollars at the top end of the market.
The Edge comes with a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 250 hp in most trims. However, the sporty Edge ST comes with a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine that is good for 335 hp. The gearbox is an 8-speed automatic, and you can choose front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 suite of advanced driver assistance safety features is standard.

The undisputed market leader among midsize five-passenger SUVs is the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Among all the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer competitors to consider, the Grand Cherokee is king. Sales are up almost 12 percent this year, in a period when overall new-vehicle sales are down dramatically.
The Grand Cherokee is popular because it offers great value. The starting price is $31,945, which is solidly in economy territory. You can spend as much as $86,900 on a Grand Cherokee, while getting up to 707 hp from a supercharged V8 engine, but there are affordable trims at every price point in between. On top of that, you can get Jeep’s proven capable four-wheel drive on the Grand Cherokee.

A close cousin to the Buick Envision is the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. This five-passenger midsize crossover stakes out the economy family vehicle sector for GM with an affordable starting price of $23,800. Chevrolet offers this SUV with some innovative drivetrains, including 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engines or a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine. Depending on which engine you choose, you’ll get a 6- or 9-speed automatic transmission, and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Chevrolet’s distinctive choices extend to trim levels. There are eight trims available in front-wheel drive, and seven more with all-wheel drive. If you choose the most expensive luxury trim Equinox, the most you’ll pay for this SUV is $36,895. That makes the Equinox a fantastic value and a compelling alternative to the Blazer.

The 2019 Dodge Durango is kind of a wild card Blazer competitor, but it offers many of the same advantages as the related Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Durango starts at $30,195, and most trims come with the capable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. However, 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engines also are available, with up to 475 hp. Durango comes with an 8-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission, and your choice of rear-wheel drive or two different all-wheel-drive systems.
The Durango is a great midsize choice if you have a boat or trailer, because it will tow up to 8,700 pounds. Inside, the Durango offers up to 84.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, and unlike most others in this class, it also offers an optional third row of seats.

The last vehicle in our list of 10 2019 Chevrolet Blazer competitors to consider is the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. This midsize two-row crossover used to be called the Santa Fe Sport, because it’s a little shorter than the three-row version now called the Santa Fe XL. A primary reason to consider the Santa Fe is its great price, starting at $25,750.
Standard equipment on the Santa Fe includes a 2.4-liter engine, though a 2.0-liter turbo engine also is available. The Santa Fe uses an 8-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Interior features include a 7-inch or 8-inch infotainment system. Both the front and rear seats may be heated, and the front seats are available with ventilation.
