Dodge says the 2015 Challenger is inspired by the 1971 model, an assertion most evident in the grille treatment, the cold-air induction hood scoops (SXT), the optional shaker hood (R/T and Scat Pack), and the new split taillight design. Seven different striping options are available, and there are nine different wheel choices.

It might look like a 44-year-old car on the outside, but the new 2015 Challenger is thoroughly modern under its skin. You can turn this car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, receive and send text messages, and reference 3-D maps on an 8.4-inch color touchscreen display. Plus, there’s a long list of high-tech safety gear aboard this tire-smoking retro-mobile, including new adaptive cruise control, a forward collision warning system, a blind spot warning system, and rear cross-path detection.

Buy a Challenger SXT or SXT Plus, and a 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine sits under the cold-air induction hood, making 90 percent of its torque between 1,800 rpm and 6,400 rpm. A new 8-speed automatic transmission is standard with this engine, equipped with paddle shifters and a Sport driving mode.

The Challenger R/T family gets a 5.7-liter “Hemi” V-8 making as much as 375 horsepower. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with the 8-speed automatic optional. Naturally, versions with “Shaker” in the name get a functional shaker-style hood treatment. You’ll need to supply the mutton-chop sideburns and flared leisure pants, Travolta.

2015 Dodge Challenger Photo Gallery: Scat Pack Models

In New York, Dodge did not discuss the Challenger SRT. That model’s 475-horsepower, 6.4-liter “Hemi” V-8 is installed in this, the 2015 Challenger Scat Pack, which Dodge claims will accelerate to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 182 mph. Launch control is standard, along with Brembo performance brakes, a performance-tuned suspension, and 20-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires.

The Challenger is getting old, but nobody really notices because it has looked that way ever since it debuted for the 2008 model year. The revamped 2015 Challenger remains deliciously retro, but now Dodge has slipped a big, fat layer of modern technology into one of our favorite cars.
