Make the move to electric with the 2019 Nissan LEAF at a starting price of $29,990. This small compact car has a range of up to 150 miles of all-electric driving. That more than covers the average person’s daily drive. It’s also a great choice for a commuter car, with an EPA-estimated 112 MPGe combined.
If that range isn’t enough, then there’s also the new Leaf Plus. It has a range of up to 226 miles with a starting price of $36,550. In any guise, it’s an affordable option with excellent fuel economy, especially if you opt for the hybrid. The sedan starts at just $19,500, while the 2019 model-year hatchback starts at $19,990. Even the hybrid is priced affordably, starting at $22,950.
Fuel economy is the second part of the affordability equation, and the Corolla certainly delivers. The sedan gets up to an EPA-estimated 34 mpg combined, while the hatchback improves on that number with up to 36 mpg combined. If fuel economy is a top priority, your best option is the hybrid featuring an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 52 mpg combined.

If you’re looking for a hot hatchback, then check out the 2019 Hyundai Veloster. Base trims get a modest 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, with a starting price of $18,500. The Turbo R-Spec trim gets a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, along with a 6-speed manual racing sport shifter, at a price of $22,900.

The 2019 Nissan Sentra is a small compact car that offers a surprisingly roomy interior. There’s plenty of room for five passengers, and three adults won’t find themselves squished in the rear seats. The Sentra also has a large trunk offering 15.1 cubic feet, along with 60/40 split-folding rear seats for managing longer cargo.
The range of six trims is affordably priced, from $17,890 for the base to $25,940 for the sporty Sentra Nismo.
