If you have a son or daughter that will soon be receiving their driver’s license, now is a good time to research auto insurance companies to find out what is being offered as far as car insurance for new drivers or a young driver.  Age and experience play a role in the costs of auto premiums.   Car insurance for young drivers under 25 years of age can usually be more expensive than insurance for an experienced driver.  However, there are auto insurance companies that offer discounts to young drivers and others that specialize in car insurance for young drivers.

Car Insurance for Teenagers Depend On:

  • The persons driving record.
  • Their gender.
  • Their age.
  • The location where the driver lives.
  • Type and age of the vehicle they will be driving.
  • Grades of the young driver.
  • Advanced driving courses they have taken.
  • Type of coverage the driver will need.

Auto insurance for young drivers varies depending on several aspects.  Ask the insurance broker what types of discounts they offer for auto insurance for teens.  Do they offer a discount for your child’s grade, age, or driving record?  If your teenage driver has a good academic record insurance companies often offer a discount for that.  They may also give discounts based on the amount or time the driver will be using the vehicle.  Insurance companies take into account what type of liability this driver is going to be.  Consequently, if the teen driver is not going to do much driving at night, or uses the vehicle to travel the same route day in and day out, they will be more likely to give a discount.

There are auto insurance companies that offer lower rates and others that offer beneficial tools for your teenager.  Look into what each can offer you’re young driver.  A number of companies offer safety tools to help young drivers learn how to deal with distractions such as their phone, bad weather, and how to drive safe at night time.   In turn, teaching them how to become safe drivers.  Others offer something called an accident forgiveness program.  This program offers “forgiveness” for their first accident if that unfortunate incident occurs.  This can assist in long-term savings if they guarantee not to raise the premium subsequent to their first accident.

Another way to find lower auto insurance for new drivers is to find out which insurance companies offer a discount if the driver passes a Pass Plus course.  The Pass Plus course is given by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and was created by the Driving Standards Agency. The instructor will guide the driver through an advanced driving and safety course.  The class is intended for new driver safety and it essentially indicates that the young driver is less of a liability for having completed this course, hence, lowering the insurance premiums.

Pass Plus consists of these six driving modules:

  • Driving on rural roads
  • Driving in town
  • Driving in all weathers
  • Driving on dual carriageways
  • Driving on motorways
  • Driving at night

There is a costs associated to this course, therefore you need to take that into account if it is not within your budget.

Types of Auto Insurance

Collision coverage will cover damage to your vehicle caused by an accident, however in most cases you will have a deductible to pay.  This is usually covered when the accident is determined to be your fault.

Comprehensive coverage will cover damage resulting from vandalism, theft, or nature taking its course such as a flood or hurricane.  Comprehensive coverage pays up to the fair market value of your vehicle.

Liability Insurance covers the damages of that you may have done to the other party.  For instance, if you get into an accident and you are at fault you’re liability insurance covers the other person’s damages and not your own.  You are liable for damages to yourself or your vehicle.

You can also obtain Full coverage, which will usually include all of the above.

There are many other types of coverage to consider.  There is also Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damages Liability.  You can add others or opt for the lowest coverage.   Consider the price of the vehicle.  It may not be in your best interest to pay a high premium for a lower price model.  Talk to you local insurance companies to find out what else they offer.  Ask what types of discounts are offered for car insurance for young drivers.  Get quotes from each company to keep.  Take them home and examine them later to decipher which auto insurance works best for your young driver.
